Report from Stacy Rosenthal, Nottingham Representative to the Reed Building Level Planning Committee (BLPC):

The committee kicked off its first meeting on October 25, 2017 and will continue to meet until June 2018. All meetings are open to the public and there is always time for public comment at the meetings. In the end of February/early March the BLPC will present the School Board with a concept design and in June we will present the School Board with a schematic design for the new Reed elementary school. The project parameters are:

  1. Create a new neighborhood elementary school with an attendance zone

  2. Support APS Strategic Plan Goals, specifically Goal #4 – Provide Optimal Learning Environments

  3. Address capacity by providing at least 725 seats

  4. Open by start of school 2021

  5. Spend a maximum project cost of $49 million, with options for less

At our last meeting on December 13, the architects presented five different schemes.  Based on the feedback from the BLPC and the communities we serve; the five schemes will be reduced to three.  The full presentation can be found here https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/171213_REED_PFRCBLPC_FINAL.pdf

The majority of the committee favored the partial replacement scheme followed by the south scheme modified.

On January 17, 2018 at 7:00 pm there will be the first Community Meeting in the Reed School Multi-purpose room.  The BLPC will present the five schemes to the community and the various impacts they could have on the surrounding neighborhood – educational, residential, and commercial.
