APS Elementary Planning Initiative Update:

Nottingham Listed as Potential Option School

BACKGROUND

On Thursday, April 12, 2018, the school board had a work session on the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and Elementary School Planning Initiative.  The initial staff presentation and analysis lists Nottingham as a potential candidate to become an option school

The main rationale by APS staff was that Tuckahoe, Nottingham, and Discovery are very close to each other and a large portion of current Nottingham K-5 students would be part of the Tuckahoe and Discovery expanded walk zone (slide 29 of the presentation) and would make it very challenging to redraw boundaries when schools are so close together.

What is an option school/program?

What is a neighborhood school?

  • Offer specialized instructional programs
  • Are county-wide with transportation provided by APS
  • Admit students via lottery application process

Current elementary school options include: Spanish Immersion at Claremont, Spanish Immersion at Key, Expeditionary Learning at Campbell, Montessori within Drew, and Arlington Traditional School. Read more about APS Elementary School Options.

  • Have attendance areas established by the School Board
  • Every student is guaranteed admission to the elementary school serving the attendance area in which the student resides

Nottingham and 19 other Arlington elementary schools are currently neighborhood elementary schools.

Let APS Staff and the School Board know:
Nottingham should remain a neighborhood school!
